Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP

Greetings from rainy Colorado!

What a difference from a few days ago.  We spent the last two nights in Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP.  Gorgeous canyons, highly recommend a visit there.  Fortunately, yesterday was our full day there and we got only a little rain in the late afternoon.  We woke up to rain this morning and expect rain most of the day.  Glad it is our travel day.  We are in long pants and sweatshirts, a huge difference from a few days ago.

Our visits to the parks are pretty much what they would normally be except for visitor centers.  The exhibits are all closed and some have modified hours for the store portion of the center.  The individuals who give advice on where to hike, etc., are all outside, even in hot Zion and Arches.  And of course, masks and distancing are required.

Today we are headed to Great Sand Dunes NP for two nights.

Yesterday morning at the campsite.  Finally wearing sweatshirts!
This is my favorite photo of the canyon.  It is 2,800 feet deep in some places.  You can put the Empire State building at the bottom and it will only reach half way to the top.  There is a hike you can take down to the river (must have wilderness permit) that drops about 2,000 feet in one mile.  Takes about an hour to get down and about four to get back up.  1,000 feet elevation in a mile seems pretty steep, can't even imagine twice the grade.
Painted rock.  Check out the Gunnison River at the bottom.
More canyon!
There is a Peregrine Falcon in this photo, believe it or not.  In the foreground of the picture, look where the rock slopes out.  Just below that a Peregrine Falcon was perched for a very long time.  Pretty hard to see in the photo but it was sure cool to see.
We attended a ranger program last night on Astronomy.  It was highly entertaining with audience participation in constellation interpretative dances and an exploding beer.  I was glad to have the mask on to help stifle my inappropriate laughter.

  1. Do they have exploding beer every night or was that special for you two?

  2. That’s a National Park I never knew about. Your photos make me want to go to new places. My bucket list is getting longer rather than shorter. I’m so glad you’re having a great time.

  4. Wonderful photos - I am thinking ahead to a time when I will be able to travel again. Your trip let's us all know again that the world is immense and beautiful. I think if you had laughed at the ranger program, it would still have been appreciated. And thanks for the photo of the peregrine falcon. Do the falcons know that there is a pandemic going on? Keep those cards and letters coming!
