Lubbock, Texas

We made it to Texas!  Arrived in Lubbock early afternoon. We are now on Central Daylight Savings Time.  The wind has been a continual companion throughout our trip, getting progressively more windy each day.  It has definitely caused my allergies to act up.  Tonight we are staying at a winery out in the middle of nowhere and are the only Harvest Host guest.  The winery is closed today to the public so we got our own private tasting and learned a lot about the history of the area.  Bobby, our host, told us about the tornado of 1970 on May 11 (yes, I know we are in tornado season).  They are planning a 50 year anniversary commemoration this year (a two year delay due to COVID).  He told us the best tornado warning app to use (MyRadar) and told us that the most important thing to do in case of a tornado is to get our of your car.  We feel better prepared!

Tomorrow we will arrive in Austin and finally have a rest day.

On our route today we traveled through Fort Sumner, New Mexico and saw that Billy the Kid's grave was there so of course we had to stop and see it.  He was born in Fort Sumner.  You can see that the tombstone is surrounded by a cage because it kept getting stolen.  After it was found in Huntington Beach, CA, it was decided to secure it from further theft.

When we reached Muleshoe,Texas, gas prices dropped even further.  That is definitely a relief.

This is the winery we are staying at tonight.  The vines are at the far right of the picture and our truck and trailer are the small specks in the middle of the row of trees.  As I said above, it is in the middle of nowhere and we had to drive on a dirt road the last two miles to get here.  So far we are loving the Harvest Host experience.  Every night is a new adventure and we have enjoyed every place we have stayed.

  1. You two are really truckin' ! and staying at lots of "alcoholic sites". Take some time out in Austin to listen to music and eat barbecue, or Mexican!
